Join your fun and experienced trip leaders, Mike and Peter, for all the exciting adventures that Sun Valley Resort and the town of Ketchum have for you! We will fly into Hailey, Idaho, giving us a short 12-mile drive to our luxury 4-star hotel, the Limelight, in downtown Ketchum.

If you haven’t been to Sun Valley before, get ready! Harkening back to the golden age of the sport, it is the birthplace of the modern ski resort. Sprinkle in some balmy weather, absence of crowds (no lift lines), plus a mountain that claims the most consistent pitch in the country, and you have a dream for skiers and boarders.

Sun Valley is America’s oldest purpose-built ski resort, where you can feel the echoes of an era when Hollywood stars, writers, socialites, and European nobility were lured here to ski and play. December 23, 1936 is when it opened for its first winter season, complete with the world’s first chairlift. Railroad tycoon Averell Harriman wanted to develop America’s first grand destination ski resort to promote passenger traffic on his Union Pacific Railroad. After an extensive search, Harriman selected a beautiful corner of the Sawtooth mountains near Ketchum, Idaho. The rest is history…

Ski film producer Warren Miller spent four winters in Sun Valley in his twenties. How’s that for a recommendation? In 1941, the movie “Sun Valley Serenade”, starring Sonja Henie, John Payne, and big band leader Glenn Miller, was filmed there. Amidst all this history, we’ll be staying at the luxurious 4-star Limelight Hotel, which opened in December 2016, so we’ll have modern comforts in a fabulous setting. And then, there’s also the wonderful town of Ketchum to enjoy!

This is a bucket list trip and a great value. In May 2020, Travel + Leisure wrote that Sun Valley is one of the "10 best Ski Trips to Take in the U.S." It's time for you to experience it yourself. Don't miss it!

The Town of Ketchum

The word most used for Ketchum is “authentic”. It prefers life a little more off the radar and a lot more laid back. That’s not to say it doesn’t have its sophisticated side. It just prefers to keep it hidden under its jeans. More than anything, it lets the mountains do the talking. And what they have to say is heard around the world. This town is a favorite ski town for many.

Step out our hotel’s front door and it’s possible to return with armfuls of shopping bags faster than you can say, “We’re gonna need a bigger suitcase.” Really, it’s all that close. And from boutiques to bookstores, it’s all begging you to take it home. If you’re looking to have a quick drink after a long day on the mountain, or just experience good food and dancing, then you’re in the right place. From dive bars to high-end watering holes, all your best options are within blocks of our hotel. When it comes to dining, Ketchum also has what you need to put your hunger in its place.

The Limelight Hotel

Given that Ketchum is a small town with a big stature among travelers, the luxury Limelight Hotel felt an obligation to get the important stuff right. That's why the Lounge has local live music acts, why the hotel was built with sustainability in mind, and why the staff holds Ketchum’s treasures and traditions close to its heart.

The Limelight is located downtown in the middle of the action. It offers transportation to the ski mountain and around town, provides a daily hearty continental breakfast (included), and has welcoming areas that include an open plaza area with firepits that will give you a new perspective on Ketchum. And that’s just the beginning.

The Mountains

Welcome to the birthplace of destination skiing. With 3,400 vertical feet and over 2,000 acres of diverse terrain, Sun Valley offers skiers and riders something special on two distinct mountains. Bald Mountain’s consistent pitch, lack of lift lines, and variety of terrain have earned it a reputation as one of the world’s finest ski mountains. Meanwhile, Dollar Mountain is the perfect place for kids and beginners to build their confidence. The peak elevation is not much higher than the base at many lower latitude resorts so altitude it not likely to be an issue.
  • Base Elevation: 5750 feet - Peak Elevation: 9150 feet
  • Total Skiable Area: 2054 acres
  • Conventional Trails: 120
  • Longest Run: 3 miles
  • Trail Classification: 36% Beginner; 42% Intermediate; 22% Expert/ Advanced

As the birthplace of destination skiing, Sun Valley has everything you can think of to do while not skiing or riding. These include: Ice Skating, Snow-Shoeing, Sleigh Rides, Nordic Skiing, Snowmobiling, Swimming, Spa and Fitness, Dining, Shopping, Breweries, Bowling, and more.
